Pollinator Preserve

In 2019…….

The Milton Garden Club in partnership with Women’s Club of Milton, Milton Historical Society, Milton Community Foundation. Dogfish Head Brewery, Milton Town government, and other organizations, businesses and Milton town residents have partnered to create a pollinator garden at 214 Union Street, the former home of Carol Thomas who was a huge supporter of the garden club. After Carol’s death the Milton Historical Society bought the property which is next door to the museum. The role of the garden club is to provide guidance and help with the clean-up and planting of the garden. The club also donated a cement bench for the garden.

Shown at one of the clean-up days, back row: Barbara Sandifer, Milton Community Foundation President Steve Crawford, Shelley Paine, Louise Huntley, and Art Winterbottom; middle row: Gillian Benson, Sue Toccafondi, Sandy Winterbottom, Pat Grieninger, and Joan Turci; front row: Declan Gallagher (our youngest volunteer) and Mary Ellen King
Garden Club member Sara Smith receives the Volunteer of the Year Award from Director Mary Knight and Board President Marie Mayor of the Milton Historical Society at the MHS annual dinner honoring volunteers. Sara received the award for her work in phase 1 of the garden

Unfortunately, the property ultimately had to be sold by the Milton Historical Society, and no longer exists.   But the memories of this teamwork and the lessons learned for future gardens live on in Milton.
